How to get your Monzo statement into Excel

  1. Download the PDF statement from Monzo online banking

    • Open the Monzo app and tap Home.
    • Tap the three dots underneath your card, then tap Bank statements.
    • Choose the date range and pick PDF as the format.
    • Save the statement for the period you need as a PDF.

What to know about Monzo statements

One amount column

Monzo statements don't split money in and money out into separate columns; there's a single amount column with signs. That sign is kept in the output, so a card payment stays negative and a salary stays positive, and the rows are added up from the opening balance to the closing one.

Pots have statements too

You can download statements for Pots as well as the main account. If a client sends both, upload them together. Money moved between a Pot and the account is a transfer in bookkeeping terms, not income or spending, so code it that way or it inflates both sides of the profit and loss.

Original documents

Monzo says its statements are original documents, so they shouldn't need stamping or signing for a mortgage, and it will provide a stamped or signed copy if you ask. For conversion it makes no difference which version you have.

When the app's CSV is enough

If you have the app and the account is yours, the CSV download is the quickest route for recent months. Conversion earns its keep with PDFs that arrive by email, a pile of statements with date ranges that need checking for overlaps, or a closed account's history.

Accounting tip

If Monzo already feeds into Xero, import converted files only for months the feed doesn't cover, so nothing appears twice. When you reconcile, code Pot movements as transfers rather than income or expenses; the Xero-ready CSV keeps them as ordinary signed rows you can match.

Monzo statement questions

Can't I just download a CSV from Monzo?
Yes, if you have the app: it offers PDF, CSV and QIF statements for a date range you pick. Convert here when all you have is the PDF, for example statements a client or tenant sent you, or when you want the balances checked across several statements.
Can I convert the statement Monzo sends when an account closes?
Yes. The bank emails a closed account's full transaction history as a password-protected document and sends the password separately by text or email. Upload the document as it is and type that password when asked; it opens the file and isn't kept.
Can I import converted Monzo rows into QuickBooks or Xero?
Yes. Review the rows, then export a QuickBooks or Xero CSV.
