NatWest's Online Banking can export transactions to Excel, CSV or OFX for Sage, Quicken and Microsoft Money. Statements are a separate thing: PDFs, available for up to seven years. This page is for bookkeepers and account holders who need those statement periods in a spreadsheet, complete with the balances a reconciliation depends on.

What to know about NatWest statements

What the export gives you

From 'View transactions', NatWest lists Microsoft Excel, Lotus 123, Text (CSV) and OFX files for Money, Quicken and Sage. Today's transactions aren't included. For statement periods, or when all you have is the PDF, conversion fills the gap.

Abbreviations in the description

NatWest publishes a list of its statement abbreviations: POS for a debit card transaction, D/D for Direct Debit, S/O for standing order, BAC for an automated credit, OTR for an online banking transaction and C/L for a cash machine withdrawal. They stay in the description after conversion, which makes it easy to separate card spending from bills.

DR has two meanings

On these statements, DR can mean the account was overdrawn or that an item is a debit. The converted file doesn't rely on those letters: each transaction has a signed amount. When you review it, check that any balance marked DR reads as a negative figure.

Seven years of statements

Statements download as PDFs for up to seven years, picked a year at a time from a dropdown. If you're pulling several years, upload them in one batch and the run is checked for missing, duplicate and overlapping months before export.

Accounting tip

NatWest's own export includes OFX for Sage, and Sage Accounting also accepts CSV and XLS statement files. For statements converted here, the QuickBooks-ready CSV has the three columns Sage reads, Date, Description and Amount, in Sage's order, with dates already written dd/mm/yyyy.

  • Checked before export

Opening balance plus transactions is checked against the closing balance. Duplicate or missing periods are flagged.

  • Export formats

Excel, CSV, JSON, or QuickBooks and Xero CSV.

FAQ

NatWest statement questions

Does NatWest let me export transactions to CSV?
Yes. Online Banking lists Microsoft Excel, Lotus 123, Text (CSV) and OFX files for Microsoft Money, Quicken and Sage, but today's transactions aren't included. Statements themselves are PDFs, which you can convert here when you need the statement periods.
What does POS mean on a NatWest statement?
The bank's list of abbreviations gives POS as a point of sale or debit card transaction. Other common ones are D/D for Direct Debit, S/O for standing order and TFR for transfer. All of them stay in the description column after conversion, so you can filter by them in Excel.
Can I import converted NatWest rows into QuickBooks or Xero?
Yes. Review the rows, then export a QuickBooks or Xero CSV.
