What to know about National Bank of Canada statements

156,78 rather than 156.78

French statements use a comma for the decimal and a space for thousands, so 2 345,22 means two thousand three hundred and forty-five dollars and twenty-two cents. Pasted into an English Excel, that becomes text or the wrong number. The converter outputs it as 2345.22, signed by direction.

Descriptions stay in French

Transaction descriptions are kept exactly as printed, so a French statement gives you French descriptions. If your books are kept in English, set up bank rules in QuickBooks Online or Xero to categorise recurring payees once, rather than translating each row.

A year of statements in one search

Since the search takes a time period, you can download every statement for a fiscal year together. Upload them as a batch and each period is checked to start where the last one ended. A missing month or a duplicate download is flagged.

Does it work with English-language National Bank statements too?
Yes. The language is detected from the statement and the right date and number conventions are applied. You can mix French and English statements in one batch; the output columns are the same either way.
Our business account can export transactions. Do we still need this?
Business online banking exports up to 10,000 transactions at a time as CSV, QBO, OFX or QFX, which is quicker for recent activity. Convert statements for periods you no longer have online, or files you were sent. Business statement PDFs now start with RELCPTE_ACCTSTMT instead of Account_statement.
Can I convert a National Bank credit card statement?
If it's a PDF, yes; card statements are under Download my eStatements. Purchases and payments come out with opposite signs so they don't cancel each other by accident, and French amounts are handled as on a chequing statement.
